FAQ

What Mac do I need?
File My Bills requires macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later, and an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later). The on-device AI classification model requires Apple Silicon — it won't run on Intel Macs. If you have an Intel Mac, you can still use File My Bills with your own Anthropic API key for classification.
Does it work with email accounts other than iCloud Mail?
Version 1 connects to iCloud Mail (IMAP). Support for other IMAP providers — Gmail, Outlook, Fastmail — is planned for a future update.
Do I need an Anthropic API key?
No. On-device classification using a local AI model is the default — no API key, no account, no ongoing cost. The Anthropic API option (Settings → Classification) is there if you want cloud-grade classification on documents the local model struggles with. You'd supply your own key from console.anthropic.com.
Where are my PDFs stored?
You choose the folder during setup. File My Bills creates a hierarchy inside that folder: Property / Category / Tax Year / vendor-date.pdf. The files are plain PDFs in your Finder — no proprietary format, no lock-in.
Is my iCloud password safe?
Yes. Your password is stored in the macOS Keychain — the same secure storage used by Safari, Mail, and other Apple apps. It is never sent to our servers (there are no servers). File My Bills connects directly from your Mac to iCloud's IMAP endpoint.
What counts as a "bill" — will it pick up marketing emails?
File My Bills uses a candidacy filter before classification — it looks for signals like invoice numbers, amount due, payment terms, and known billing sender patterns. Marketing emails, newsletters, and receipts for one-off purchases are generally filtered out. If something slips through, you can correct it and the app learns from the correction.
I manage multiple investment properties — how does that work?
You add each property in Settings, then File My Bills assigns incoming bills to the correct property based on the vendor, address signals in the email, and your correction history. Bills for each property are filed into separate folder branches and shown separately in the sidebar. Tax year totals are broken down per property.
Is this a subscription? Will I be charged again?
No. $24.99 USD is a one-time purchase from the Mac App Store. No subscription, no annual renewal, no in-app purchases. All future updates are included.
